Howdy all,
i havent written in, like a lifetime, well thats just how it goes, other people use twitter to tell the word about what dinner they had, i just stay silent and watch society go down in 160 characters ;)
However, this post isnt about yapping about Social Sites, its about something way more important, Nautilus Emblems, Dropbox Emblems to be more specific. Never heard about Dropbox? Maybe you should consider checking out the website getdropbox.com, its a nice piece of software thatll sync whatever i put into a certain folder onto my Online Storage (2 Gigs) really conveniently, i know its proprietary evilness coming to think about some Linux Dos and Donts, but i just couldnt handle stuff like rsync or whatever you call it properly, at least not with some intense thinking on how to setup a logical synching environment, and now please shut up Linux Nerd, i COULD do it, im just to lazy!
Im like everybody, im lazy concerning computers, i love Linux and all, but sometimes its just a pain in the Ass you almost have to learn a new Programming Language to do some simple Setups (thats the Impression you get, you dont actually have to learn C+, i didnt mean to scare you off, use Linux! Its Awesome!)). So, its off to Dropbox. Im not gonna lose to many words about how you set it up since its easy as pie to do so, basically youre gonna end up with a folder called /home/yourname/Dropbox (if thats your chosen destination), the synching isnt the issue anyway, but what Dropbox does is, it puts some butt ugly senseless emblems onto the Folders youre synching, like the Icon for the "Up to Date" Status, it looks like a Check Sign, like in "Everything is okay with this Folder", well whats that supposed to mean? I ASSUME everything is okay, actually i insist unless my Harddrive IO is messed in one or the other way.
So whats this emblem all about? It doesnt tell you its somehow connected to an Online Storage in any way which is totally against any rule of Smart Interface Design or e.g. the Tango Icon Design Principles. The emblem might as well suggest some kind of Completed Task within this Folder that is in no way connected to dropbox or anything alike but got labeled by the user himself with a "Default" emblem which happens to be a look-a-like of the talked about Emblem and is a basic Emblem of the Gnome Desktop Environment. So i cramped up some icons which are a little more clear as to their actual purpose:
As you can see, the icons are really basically the same little Cloud just with the original dropbox synching indicator superimposed onto that little cloud i made, the Cloud is outlined green cause im using the Gnomw Wise Icon Theme which happens to be green. I chose a cloud for the Icon instead of the Dropbox Logo for the following reason, Dropbox isnt the only Service out there, Clouded Computing is doing some big leaps right now and i chose the cloud as an ultimate icon for data thats either synched to or exists on a cloud, no matter what Distributor is backing it. F.e. youre using Conduit to synch up certain folders with PicasaWeb, you can label it with a cloud emblem to indicate that the Data in this Folder is being kept online ("On the Cloud") as well.
Now Nautilus should provide some more interactive emblem management to other Software besides Dropbox (or people should write plugins...) since Dropbox can actually label any File its synching while if youre using Conduit it would result in you having to label every file manually which nobody would ever really do, whos gonna waste precious PC-Time to label a couple of hundred pictures, right?
Anyhow, anybody who whishes to can freely use these emblems on his own behalf, if you dont like them, make better ones, just one of those things im wasting my days with, and i needed to post once in a decade...cheers folks.
BTW. youll find the dropbox emblems in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/64x64/emblems, make sure you rename the files properly and delete the icon cache or they wont show up, you can check for Icon Cache files with Tracker looking for files that are called icon-theme.cache, various Themes might have them, delete them all to get to a fresh start, it might actually solve some icon issues you had prior like new Icons not showing properly....
